Over Garage Door Racking |
This suspended racking makes good use of the dead space over the garage door. It sits over the door's framework and has been designed to just clear the garage door when it opens.
The racking is made from industrial rolled channel and hanging fixings which are more commonly used to support cable runs and other services in factories. They are well suited to this storage application however.
-
The channels are only 21mm tall maximising the storage space in this "vertically snug" application.
-
The channel is galvanised so won't rust in the damp of the unheated garage.
-
The channel has rolled-in edges, so there are no sharp edges except at the cut ends, for which plastic caps are available.
-
Threaded rod is used to drop down to the racking which makes it easy to allow for the vagaries of the existing joists.
-
The channel is also available pre-slotted, minimising the need for drilling.
-
Special channel nuts are available which fit in the channel and let you clamp to it anywhere along its length. The nuts have a spring which retains them during assembly.
-
Additional components such as cable baskets and cable trays are available which can be readily fitted anywhere on the racking.
-
The components are relatively inexpensive. The material spend for this racking, including delivery and having to buy nuts in packs of 100, was under £100.
The resulting racking is good and sturdy; I can do chin-ups from it without any fear for my safety.
Useful To Know
-
The sprung channel nuts are known as "zebs" - presumably because they are reminiscent Zebedee of the Magic Roundabout.
-
There are 2 grades of channel struts. The garage racking was actually made from the lighter duty version.
